The Hill Family

Owners and Barn Managers

Bruce and Wendy Hill, along with their twin daughters Emma and Grace, are the owners and operators of The Farm at One Under Lane. In April of 2015, the Hills entered into a partnership with another family and purchased the former Windfall Farm. Bruce and Wendy decided that a country atmosphere would be the best place for their family. Bruce was raised on a farm in New Ellington, SC, outside of Aiken, and knew the many lessons farm life could teach his family and the hard work involved. Bruce is an owner-operator truck driver, whose mechanical skills and work ethic have helped develop the Farm to the point it is today.

Wendy is a middle school assistant principle with a Masters degree from USC in Administration and a Bachelors degree in Science (Biology and Chemistry major). She also has a heavy background in management. Both Wendy and Bruce have a love for animals of all kinds and for learning as many new things as possible. Emma and Grace have embraced riding competitively and life on the farm as if they were born into it. Since moving to the Farm, both Bruce and Wendy, along with Wendy’s mother, Suzy Jackson, have worked diligently to make the Farm a safe, family friendly atmosphere. Suzy moved to the farm in 2016 to be closer to her family and the horses she loves.

Early in 2019, the Hill family purchased the Farm as sole owners and have continued to pour their hearts into creating the perfect home for their family and those who may as well be!

Maddy Brown

Head Trainer

Maddy Brown is the head trainer here at The Farm at One Under Lane. She brings with her a strong background in equitation, training, and horsemanship. As a junior, Maddy enjoyed competing with her own wonderful horses as well as taking advantage of any riding opportunity she could find. She was a working student for Jennifer Sansbury at Circle A Plantation and later for Laurie Occhipinti of Grand View Ponies. At Circle A, Maddy learned strong horse and barn management principles from Jennifer, who went on to be the head barn manager at St. Andrews University. At Grand View Ponies, Maddy trained, rode, and showed young Welsh and Welsh Cross ponies from their first rides to the “A” circuit. There, she continued her education in training, preparation, and show horse care. These opportunities and her tireless pursuit of the sport opened the door for Maddy to compete in hunters and equitation at local through nationally rated horse shows on her own mounts and to catch-ride horses owned by some of the industry’s top professionals such as Peter Pletcher, Elizabeth Mandarino, and Harrison Ford.

In 2013, Maddy was recruited to the University of South Carolina’s NCAA Varsity equestrian team. There, Maddy learned about a team atmosphere in the equestrian sport in addition to improving her riding and horsemanship skills, and learning how to host horse shows, including the SEC Championship. As an amateur, Maddy ribboned at PSJ and BRHJA Adult Medal Finals and was Champion or Reserve at every show in the Adult Equitation, Hunters, and Jumpers aboard her OTTB mare, Maritime. After a banner year, Maddy declared her Professional status and has been teaching and training ever since. Maddy ran and managed her own Garnet Hill Farm before being brought on at The Farm at One Under Lane, and has coached many riders to success including national championship qualifiers, 2022 NCHJA and PSJ Pony Medal Finals Reserve Champions, 2018 HJ Fox Pony Medal Finals Champion, 2017 Tally Ho Perpetual Medal Champion, and countless year end awards. Not just winners in the arena, Maddy’s students also won the national award for the USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge Stable Challenge in 2016. For the past several years, Maddy competed with her gelding Topsail in the jumper ring, with whom she was year end Champion or Reserve every year 2016-2020 and claimed many feature class wins. She was also Champion of the 2023 HJ Fox Trainer’s Equitation Medal. She graduated from the University of South Carolina with a BA in Mass Communications, holds an FEI Level 1 Course Design certificate, and maintains an active SafeSport certificate of completion.

Lexie Townsend
Assistant Barn Manager & Assistant Trainer

Lexie Townsend is the assistant trainer and assistant barn manager at The Farm. Her junior years were guided by her green pony, Pepperwoods Picasso. The two of them competed in SCHJA, BRHJA, and PSJ horse shows, claiming a Junior Sportsmanship award of the year and trips to Pony Finals & Pony Medal Finals. After the pony world, Lexie made the transition to train at WhiteHorsesLLC, bringing along her Holsteiner gelding, Conino. They frequented the Low Child/Adult Jumpers and equitation classes. During her partnership with ‘Fox’, the two mastered their skillsets in the show ring and attended clinics under Mclain Ward. In her spare time, she rode IEA for the Jr. Cougars, taking home fourth in the nation in her division one season.

Her love for the team-based approach of IEA was a guide when searching for the right college, and after moving to Columbia in 2017, Lexie started her career as a team rider for the IHSA club team at the University of South Carolina. Her seasons on the team were a success, both in the show ring and on the sidelines helping her teammates prepare for competition. Lexie graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice, and worked as a Veterinary Radiology Nurse at CVETS, until finding her home at The Farm. She brings with her a refreshing optimism, a hard work ethic, and a duty to guide the next generation of riders into true horse people.

It takes a village.

Keeping our equine athletes and friends in tip-top shape is a group effort. These additional team members help us provide our horses with the best care possible.
